Mao was a popular U-15 idol several years ago, making herself known as Akane in the Japanese drama Kids War. She had been in several dramas before that starting at the young age of five, but it wasn't until Kids War in 1999 that Japanese audiences started paying attention.
Most Western fans know her for her role in the live-action adaptation of Hana Yori Dango, which aired in October 2005. Mao played the main character, Makino Tsukushi, a 16-year-old commoner trying to survive in an elite high school full of playboys and snobs.
Now at the age of 20 and having taken a year off of dramas to focus on her university studies (she was only in one film), Mao could be seen reprising her role as Makino Tsukushi in Hana Yori Dango 2 (Returns), the sequel to the first series. Watch this talented young actress as she continues to break out into a rising star!
