Momoko Doll: A Brief History
Momoko DOLL was created in 2001 by the Japanese company PetWORKs. Created by Manabe Namie, Momoko "reflects the lifestyle of today's Tokyo." Each doll ranged in price from a little less than $100 to over $300, with the average doll costing around $150; this price was high due to the limited number of each doll being produced. PetWORKs continued to make Momoko until the end of 2004, when it announced it would be handing over the license to Sekiguchi. Manabe Namie would still have ownership over the dolls, but the new Sekiguchi releases would be much easier on wallets, at around $70 per doll (although a few dolls are more expensive). Sekiguchi released their first line of Momokos in Spring 2005, and although there has been dislike for some aspects of the new Momoko she is still loved by her fans.
The Dolls
NOTICE!!! This section will no longer be updated as the official website now has an English version.
So often do I see people ask what the dolls are called in Japanese, or how they are described. Think of this section of Tokyo Trendy as a translated version of the Sekiguchi website. These are not direct translations, but short summaries of what is written at the site. If you see any mistakes, do let me know. I do not intend on doing the PetWORKs website, as it already has an English version. Some dolls are illustrations because photos of them have not been released yet.
If there is only a doll name in English, that means it is also her name in Japanese. "Foreign title" is the name she is most often called by fans not from Japan.
