Shimotsuma Monogatari is a novel written by Takemoto Novala. It tells the story of a 17-year-old lolita named Ryuugasaki Momoko, who lives in the countryside of Shimotsuma with her yankee (thug) father and grandmother. Momoko is indifferent to most things and loves Rococo, a French art and culture from the 1700s. She has no friends but also has no want for them. Momoko simply enjoys her life of looking out for herself and living for her favorite dresses from Baby, The Stars Shine Bright, a Japanese lolita brand. Her world is turned upside-down when she meets Shirayuri Ichiko (real name Ichigo), a yankee looking to buy counterfeit clothing from Momoko. Momoko thinks their first encounter will be their last, but Ichiko begins to hang around her like a fly. What begins as an annoyance turns into the best friendship Momoko ever had.
In 2004 the novel was adapted into a film directed by Nakashima Tetsuya, and the same year made into a manga by Kanesada Yukio. It was announced in late 2004/early 2005 that the film would be licensed for Western audiences and given the title "Kamikaze Girls". (Note: Shimotsuma Monogatari translates to "Shimotsuma Story".)
Written by male lolita author Takemoto Novala in 2002, the novel goes in-depth with Momoko's obsession with Rococo and her mishaps with Ichiko. Its full title is "Shimotsuma Monogatari - Lolita-chan to Yankee-chan" (Shimotsuma Story - The Lolita & The Yankee). After the film came out, the novel was reprinted with a new jacket of Tsuchiya Anna and Fukada Kyoko in their roles. A second novel was written and released in July 2005 entitled "Shimotsuma Monogatari - Kan - Yankee-chan to Lolita-chan to Satsujin Jiken" (Shimotsuma Story - The End - The Yankee and the Lolita and the Murder Case). The first novel was released in North America as "Kamikaze Girls", like the film. It is unknown if the sequel will ever be translated.
Without a doubt, the film is what made Shimotsuma Monogatari so popular. With the great idol and actress Fukada Kyoko starring as Momoko and rocker Tsuchiya Anna (formerly of the band Spin Aqua) as Ichigo, the movie was sure to become a hit and indeed, it did. The film is nearly two hours long but each minute of it is entertaining. Pop/rock artist Kawase Tomoko (as Tommy heavenly6) sang the theme song and an insert song for the film. Famous composer Kanno Yoko did nearly all of the music, aside from a couple of songs by indie artists and Johann Strauss pieces. Other supporting cast in the movie included gravure idol Koike Eiko and actress Shinohara Ryoko.
Because of the high prominence of Baby, The Stars Shine Bright in the film, some fans call it "The Two-Hour-Long Advertisement for BSSB".
The manga adaptation was released July 20th, 2004 by Betsucomi's Flower Comics. The storyline was, of course, heavily based on the novel and the art and other bits of story be Kanesada Yukio. It included two parts for Shimotsuma Monogatari, the first being the main novel and the second being Ichigo's story. The last two short stories in the manga, "Koyubi-hime" and "Nakayubi-hime", are original works by Yukio. The entire comic book was also released in North America as "Kamikaze Girls".
